Oh man you're happening right now Tell us about yourself How did you get started Um You

know what I'm originally from Gary Indiana and I um I went to a performing arts school and um

from there it kind of took off I was a musical theater major and um performing was really um something

that I was drawn to I enjoyed um you know entertaining the crowd having fun and then I really

fell in love with doing plays um doing theater I did a lot of theater in Chicago

bunch of theater um which helped me hone my skills Um But while I was living in

Chicago I was also singing with a group so I was doing them both Um and

um I was working um I was uh I went to I went to beauty school so I was

a licensed cosmetologist for for a long time in Chicago And I ended up yeah and I ended up doing

um this lady her I was doing her hair and she was like real high up in soft

sheen Right And uh like vice president or something I forget her name but I was doing

her hair and she said that she needed a merchandiser to go to Los Angeles to show people how

to use Mazzoni hair products That was the hair product And I said I'll go and um so sheen

you know paid me packed me up I moved to L A and um so I stayed there Um

I've been in L A ever since I stopped working for SAL machine though Tell me I mean do you

still do hair And and I mean was that like something you wanted to do or that

was something you needed You know what I grew up in a beauty salon My mother was the

last time I was just and um I went to perform in our school so I was ready

to perform So I I knew that I needed to make money and I I knew that

I was not gonna be sitting in somebody's college classroom It just wasn't my thing I knew that early Um

but I knew I had to learn something So I went to trade school um learn how to do hair

and I moved out when I was 18 and um I've never been back So I've

um I've been on my own since I was 18 Um doing hair hustling Um because once you start

doing hair you just learn different ways how to make money So I've always been kind of crafty you

know hustling making things happen Ok So you know as as a mentor as someone who's uh going before

you know what I mean Doing the hair doing the acting how did you get into acting from

from the hair You wanna hear something crazy So I met this cat His name is Craig

Boyd right Roommate and uh true story He would uh we we we became roommates because I cut

his hair He needed a place but he would only stay at the place on the weekend

and every weekend he had you know he was having fun He was living his life every weekend

and I was like man how are you enjoying yourself like this every weekend Because he you

know he had a nice variety and uh he was like I'm doing this play You should

come and see this play I'm doing this play I'm like you do a play

He's like yeah So I said but I was already I already did theater I already

did a bunch of theater musicals but I hadn't done like real theater You did But

I knew how to perform on stage because I did you know musicals So um I go to his play

and it was cool He was OK I was like man I wanna do that I wanna do that Play

The title of the play was called Hell Cab So each actor had an opportunity to play like uh

like 78 different characters right So um I asked him how could I get in that play He was like

shit I'm doing it Um But some time it went by and um he had to go

out of town for a bit and he asked me could I you know what I audition So I

auditioned I booked a role and because I I was doing hair at the time all of my clients was

coming and they was telling people So I was packing the house like every Saturday

Sunday Friday Saturday Sunday cause a lot of people couldn't even believe I was even

doing it So you know I have more people coming to see me if I was gonna screw up

than to see me Do you know I had a bunch of them I know about that Yes So

I had a bunch of them So um so that's how it started you know acting doing you know

Um but I was still singing with a group but when I moved to L A I moved to L

A with the intentions on pursuing an R and B career move quick Well that

was kind of weird because most people go to L A to to not not to sing right They

go to act So you went to S Yeah And I was you know and I was but something inside

said you need to take a class you know hone your skills song because I wasn't doing a

play I wasn't doing anything I was just you know singing and performing because I'm I messed with musicians

here and then you know we start performing different little places in L A Um

but um some said you know just practice So I went to this acting class I'll never

forget it His name was Mark Malice Primetime Acting Studios I took like this uh when you first get

to meet him class you know you just to see what you can do class

I guess So after that class was over I was leaving He said hey hey hey I don't want you

to stay I don't want you to stay Don't go nowhere I was like what's up He

was like I got a master class I want you to come upstairs and he had a whole another

level to this place You know like like this way they treat the real actors you know

what I'm saying It was crazy And uh everybody in the class uh was looking

at me all funny because I guess he had a process and I just jumped the line You did

But I was the only black in there too though You see so being the only

black that was the thing too cause nobody wanted to do a scene with me that

my first day in the class and he he ripped all of them Talked about

talked about being racist He he got on that case then then everybody wanted to

Uh Yeah but um yeah that's where I learned how to core really good Um Understand you know the camera

the camera more camera angles different things like that Wow that is so cool You know I literally love

that that you go in for one thing and you find out that it's something totally different that you're

not even there for that I mean you could be there for that but that's not

the main focus How did that feel to you after you figured out Wait a

minute wait a minute Well um I never stopped doing my music because I write I've always was with like

a production crew of guys who would would be writing and stuff So I was always doing it I just

wasn't performing live you know what I'm saying I got so I was always I was always doing it but

I just you know you know it was a lot Yeah that's a lot to take on I mean

how did you balance that and then getting into acting and now you know you still have

your band you're still doing that So we need to talk about that too Ok

Well it's hard to balance both That's I tell people you know focus on one thing if you can

and you know and and do that because I was all over the place because I was good at

both You know it's hard when you're really good at both you know Um but I so

I kind of when I got married and started having kids I um I fell back on the music

mostly you know and um was just doing acting and working a regular job at that time Um but then

but once I got my divorce um I was able to kick back into music and

everything and life was happier I'm not gonna go there But what I am gonna

say is that sometimes things happen Oh yeah things happen for the better and it was and it was better

I I love this relationship I have with my boys you know I got 50%

custody So that's cool Um so yeah that's wonderful Wonderful So let's talk about the music you went into

funk funk music is like you know I I think there's there's like this underground funk and then there's like

this new funk Where are you Um I would say I have uh it would be it's like right in

the middle because it can't be too old it can't be too new because it's

gotta stay funky you know Um but um I have to I'm gonna send you a track I

gotta send you a song that I did But did you go to my youtube

page Because I got a I got like at least four or five videos on there Yes

And we will be playing whichever video you want us to play at the end of

this because you know we got it's a music video Freedom ain't free that's on there It's a music

video or Killing Me That's a music video I did a song dedicated to Men um

Slain by the Police called Why You Keep Killing Me Mhm But you got something coming

change Um Yeah change I I shot a music video with um Clyde Goings and um I'm thinking about dropping

it like around my birthday in August August baby Hey um I do have a

new film that is out now Look it up It's called um Kings of L A

and it's on um I know it's on Amazon Prime and it's on a couple of

more outlets But um it's a cool movie I think Um it's a cool movie and uh

I gotta go see that now Yeah And season two of the Black Hamptons will be dropping in late August

early September Wow Let me see Have you seen the Black Hamptons I have been recording

and interviewing like it's hard to balance that It's hard to balance you know being on one side and

watching stuff when you're editing and doing this But definitely I will definitely take my time and and

like and and go look at it definitely Now let me ask you just one

question you know there are you know strikes going on right now How are you handling

that And what are you doing during this time Um you know I've been already rehearsing

with this guitar player so I'm I'm gonna go find me a couple of coffee shops a couple

of cool places to go kick back put a little hat out start performing with my my guitar player you

know you know I can hustle make some bread Um but I was on a picket line yesterday I

went yesterday Yeah Yeah Yeah A lot of people don't understand what this is all about

but I do and and I hope and I wish that this does resolve itself soon Uh

because you know you know it's just like any it's like music back in the

eighties when they took all the money and they ran with it and they didn't pay these people It's the

same thing It's the same thing they've been doing it They've been doing that for years

now So it's like come on give us something Exactly Exactly That's right That's right

Chicago También estaba cantando con un grupo, así que los estaba haciendo tanto Um como

um estaba trabajando um estaba uh fui a fui a la escuela de belleza así que estaba

cosmetóloga autorizada durante mucho tiempo en Chicago. Y terminé, sí, y terminé haciendo

um, esta señora, ella, yo estaba peinándola y ella estaba muy arriba en ropa suave.

brillo Correcto Y uh como vicepresidente o algo así. Olvidé su nombre pero estaba haciendo

Ya sabes a lo que me refiero: Peinar, actuar, ¿cómo llegaste a actuar?

del pelo Quieres escuchar algo loco Entonces conocí a este gato Su nombre es Craig

Boyd tiene razón, compañero de cuarto y, uh, historia real. Él se convertiría en compañeros de cuarto porque corté.

su cabello Necesitaba un lugar pero solo se quedaría en el lugar el fin de semana

Y cada fin de semana sabía que se estaba divirtiendo. Estaba viviendo su vida cada fin de semana.

y yo estaba como hombre, ¿cómo te diviertes así todos los fines de semana? Porque él tú

Sé que tenía una buena variedad y él estaba como si estuviera haciendo esta obra. Deberías

ven a ver esta obra estoy haciendo esta obra soy como si hicieras una obra

Él es como sí Entonces dije pero ya estaba Ya hice teatro Ya

Hice un montón de musicales de teatro, pero yo no había hecho teatro como el de verdad. Tú lo hiciste, pero

Sabía cómo actuar en el escenario porque conocía los musicales. Así que voy a su obra.

y fue genial Él estaba bien Yo estaba como hombre Quiero hacer eso Quiero hacer eso Jugar

El título de la obra se llamaba Hell Cab. Entonces cada actor tuvo la oportunidad de interpretar como uh

Fue un poco extraño porque la mayoría de la gente va a Los Ángeles para no cantar bien.

Ir a actuar Entonces fuiste a S Sí Y yo era, ya sabes, y no era más que algo dentro

Dije que necesitas tomar una clase, sabes, perfecciona tus habilidades, canción porque no estaba haciendo una

jugar No estaba haciendo nada, solo estaba, ya sabes, cantando y actuando porque me metí con los músicos.

Aquí y entonces sabes que comenzamos a actuar en diferentes lugares pequeños en Los Ángeles.

pero algunos dijeron que ya sabes, solo practica. Así que fui a esta clase de actuación que nunca volveré a hacer.

Lo que estoy diciendo fue una locura y todos en la clase estaban mirando.

Me mira muy gracioso porque supongo que él tuvo un proceso y yo simplemente salté la línea.

Pero yo también era el único negro allí. Ya lo ves, siendo el único.

Negro, esa era la cosa también porque nadie quería hacer una escena conmigo que

mi primer día en la clase y él los arrancó todos. Hablé de

habló de ser racista. Él se metió en ese caso y luego todos querían

Uh, sí, pero um, sí, ahí es donde aprendí a hacer core muy bien. Um Entiendes, conoces la cámara.

la cámara más ángulos de cámara diferentes cosas como esa Wow, eso es genial. Sabes, literalmente me encanta.

que entras por una cosa y descubres que es algo totalmente diferente de lo que estás

ni siquiera ahí para eso quiero decir que podrías estar ahí para eso pero eso no es

el enfoque principal ¿Cómo te sentiste después de descubrirlo? Espera un momento

minuto espera un minuto Bueno, nunca dejé de hacer mi música porque escribo, siempre he estado con

un equipo de producción de muchachos que estarían escribiendo y esas cosas. Así que siempre estaba haciéndolo, simplemente

no estaba actuando en vivo, ya sabes lo que estoy diciendo, lo entendí, así que siempre lo estaba, siempre lo estaba haciendo, pero

Solo sabes que sabes que fue mucho Sí, eso es mucho que asumir, quiero decir.

¿Cómo lograste equilibrar eso y luego empezar a actuar y ahora sabes que todavía tienes?

Tu banda todavía estás haciendo eso Así que tenemos que hablar de eso también. Ok.

Bueno, es difícil equilibrar ambos. Eso es lo que le digo a la gente que conoces, si puedes, céntrate en una cosa.

y sabes y lo haces porque yo estaba en todos lados porque era bueno en

ambos Sabes que es difícil cuando eres realmente bueno en ambos sabes Um pero yo

Cuando me casé y comencé a tener hijos, volví a recurrir a la música.

En su mayoría, ya sabes, y um solo estaba actuando y trabajando en un trabajo regular en ese momento, um, pero luego

pero una vez que me divorcié, pude volver a la música y

todo y la vida fue más feliz no voy a ir allí pero lo que voy a hacer

Lo que digo es que a veces pasan cosas. Oh, sí, las cosas pasan para mejor y fue y fue mejor.

Me encanta esta relación que tengo con mis hijos, sabes, tengo el 50%.
