    hi I'm Jon her scooter and welcome to another edition of flashback Cinema today we

    present an iconic 1980s movie starring a legendary musical performer from 1984 it's Purple Rain the 1980s

    were a decade of musical Superstars and no star Shone brighter than Prince the Minneapolis

    born singer songwriter and virtuoso performer combined a musical style which fused Rock Jazz R&B

    Funk and pop with a flamboyant stage Persona that was uniquely his Prince or Prince Rogers Nelson his full name

    at Birth had parents who were musical his father was the jazz musician and songwriter

    John Lewis Nelson who performed under the stage name Prince Rogers and his mother was the singer Maddie Shaw who

    had sung with her future husband's band Prince later recalled that he was five when he saw his

    father perform and the experience was so exhilarating that it made him want to be

    a musician Prince wrote his first song Funk machine on his piano when he was 7 years old and

    soon after he also learned to play the guitar and the drums in high school Prince

    played football basketball and baseball and studied ballet at the Minnesota Dance Theater he played guitar

    for a local band 94 East and recorded a demo which led to a contract with Warner Brothers records when

    he was only 19 Prince's early albums for which he played virtually all of the instruments

    himself brought him a fan following and critical acclaim mmmmm but it was his fifth album

    singles including Little Red Corvette Little Red Corvette greatly expanded princes fan base with the video receiving extensive

    airplay on MTV at a time when the fledgling Music Channel feature few black performers with the success

    of the 1999 album Prince set his sights on becoming a movie star demonstrating the type

    of audacity which fueled his success Prince told his manager Robert Cavallo that he would not renew his contract

    unless Cavallo landed him a major Studio film the result co-produced by Robert Cavallo was

    Purple Rain Purple Rain is Loosely based on princess early life and was filmed primarily in the singers

    native Minneapolis it features a song score composed by Prince including several numbers performed by Prince and his band

    The Lucien it live concert sequences the Purple Rain soundtrack album was released in June of 1984 and the filmed

    opened in theaters one month later both were wildly successful the movie grossed over 70 million dollars in box

    office receipts and the soundtrack album went on to sell 25 million copies accounting for

    a quarter of the astounding total of 100 million records eventually sold by prince prince won the Academy

    Award for original song score purple rain and the soundtrack album earned Prince and the revolution a Grammy for Best

    Rock performance by a duo or group not long before Purple Rain opened in theaters Prince joke that he

    was having nightmares in which the popular film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert panned his movie he needn't

    have worried Siskel and Ebert gave Purple Rain two thumbs up and put it on their top ten list

    for 1984 now joined by Apollonia Kotero and Morris Day here's Prince at the peak
