What I want to share with you today is Jesus what a wonderful name As we enter into

this time of the acknowledgment of the birth of Jesus I want to talk to you about who Jesus is

and his purpose for his coming Oftentimes we see Jesus during this period of time

as a babe in a manger Although that's an accurate account from scripture we have to understand him

as being more than that We have to understand the purpose of his birth the purpose of

his coming So during this holiday season we should never forget that Jesus is the reason for the season

This season is not about material gifts It's not about parties or celebrations It's about

acknowledging the greatest gift that has ever been given to mankind And that gift is Jesus Christ

It's not about a baby in a manger It's not about the 3 wise men

who came to Christ There was more than 3 but they came bringing gifts It's not

about that It's about the coming of the Messiah our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ into the world

That's what it's about It's about the fulfillment of prophecy that prophesized the coming of

our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Not only that he would be born but where he would be born

And how he would be born of a virgin into this world So that's what

it's all about So today I want to talk about that name Jesus What a wonderful name And how that

name Jesus Christ should be amplified during this time of the year Now as Christians we amplify and

proclaim the name of Jesus every day of the year but especially this time of the

year because people's focus is not on Jesus Their focus is on gifts their focus

is on entertaining While all that's good let's not lose focus of the reason for

the season and the reason for the season is Jesus Christ because there's something about that name It's

a wonderful name It's a powerful name It's a holy name and we need to understand

it So the first scripture I want to look at this morning has come from Psalm 72:17 and it

says this May His name endure forever May His name continue as long as the sun shines In Him may

all nations be blessed May they call him blessed So we see here on Psalm

the sun shines There is a name by which all nations will be blessed and

all nations will call him blessed Now what does that mean Now at this time they knew the

name as Jehovah They anticipated the coming of that name Jehovah that name that will endure forever that name that

will be a blessing to all the nations So they looked forward to that name

In Isaiah chapter 9 verse 6 we find out more about the name Say for unto us a child

is born unto us a son is given and the government will be upon his shoulders and he

will be called Wonderful Counselor Mighty God everlasting Father Prince of Peace For unto us a child is

born Based on the Old Testament prophets they prophesized about a child that would be born

by a virgin and that child would be the savior of the world They had several names

that this child would be identified as a wonderful counselor the mighty God Everlasting Father the Prince

of Peace We're talking about that name that anticipated name That long awaited name that people was

waiting for who would come into the world to be a blessing to the world Now we fast forward

to the Gospel of Matthew chapter 1 verse 21 and 23 and it says she

Mary will give birth to a son and you are to give him the name Jesus

because he will save his people from their sins All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said

through the prophets Behold the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son and they

will call him Emmanuel which means God with us It says that Mary will give birth to a

son Now if you go back and you look at the Old Testament record it

just said a virgin This virgin had no name But now we know based on Matthew account

that her name is Mary She would be the one that would bring forth the son that

was prophesized Isaiah And it says that you are to give him the name Jesus Now this

is the first time in the Bible where the name Jesus is mentioned Matthew 1:21 She will give birth

to a son and you are to give him the name Jesus Before that time in the

Bible he was identified by different names but this is the first time in the biblical record Where the

name Jesus Yeshua is mentioned And here's the reason why the angel told him to give him this

name because he will save his people from their sins This was the promised Messiah that

they were looking forward to in the Old Testament Now the angel is saying this child

that you're about to birth is that Messiah That will save his people from their

sins All this took place to fulfill prophecy Behold the virgin will be with child and will give birth

to a son and they will call him Emmanuel Now that name Emmanuel means God with us Isaiah

with us because that's what the word Emmanuel means So Jesus Christ the son that married with birth is God

with us Now this is an important thing to know and understand Many people try to discard

and discount the virgin birth but it was prophesized and the prophecy came true It

came to fulfillment Now let's look at Luke's account Now in Luke chapter 1 verse 30 to

found favor with God Behold you will conceive and give birth to a son and you are to give

him the name Jesus He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High

The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David and he will

reign over the house of Jacob forever His kingdom will never end If you go

back to Psalm 72:17 and it says that the name will endure forever the name will continue

as long as the sun shines and that all the nation will be blessed and

they will call him blessed The angel told Mary don't be afraid for you have

found favor with God Now what did Mary do to obtain the favor of God And the answer is nothing

but God found favor with Mary The favor of God is something that you don't work for The favor

of God is something you can't earn God found favor upon her life God chose her Now she could

not have been the only virgin in the land but of all the virgins in the

land God chose her God is sovereign He does things that are beyond our understanding and comprehension So

the angel told her Don't be afraid Mary for you have found favor with God

Behold you will conceive and give birth to a son and you are to give him the name

Jesus So that lines up with Matthew's account But Luke expanded it a little more He

will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High The Lord will give him the

throne of his father David When you study the Davidic covenant God made a promise to David This

is the fulfillment of the promise that God made The Lord God will give him the

throne of his father David from which Jesus' lineage came through and he will reign over the

house of Jacob talking about Israel forever and his kingdom will never end So we're talking about this

wonderful name this promised Messiah that was prophesized in the Old Testament and now has come

into the world And this is what we celebrate as believers but what was his purpose for coming into the

world Now we saw in Luke's account that he would save his people Now this is specifically

talking about Israel because God made a covenant with Israel but God had a bigger plan

He had a broader plan with the coming of His Son Not only would he be

Israel's savior but he would be the savior for the whole world In Acts chapter 4 verse

given to men by which we must be saved So that name carries within it salvation Jesus Christ who

would go to the cross as the only sacrificial offering for the sins of the world he

would be crucified He would be buried and raised again on the 3rd day just like the scripture

said And because of what he did on the cross there is a name by which men

can be saved And that name is not Muhammad that name is not Buddha that name is Jesus Christ Salvation

exists in no one else for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which

we must be saved So there's no other name that will bring salvation But Jesus said

in John 14:6 I am the way I am the truth I am the life

Now notice what he said and knows what he didn't say He didn't say I am a

way He says I am the way I am the only way to the Father Ephesians chapter 1 verse 21

says this Christ has made a name that is far above all rule and authority power

and dominion and every name that is named not only in the present age but also in the one to

come So there's no name higher than the name of Jesus Christ Jesus' name is far above all power and

dominion There is no name greater than the name of Jesus and we have that

name That name has been given to us as a power of authority If you

transact legal business on behalf of another and that person gives you a power of attorney you

have that person's name And you can exercise power and authority to transact business in

that person's name You and I as believers you and I as sons and daughters of the Most High we

have been given that authority by Jesus Christ himself Matthew 28:18 then Jesus came to them and said

all authority how much authority All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me So

Jesus has all authority So there's no authority rule or power dominion that can override Jesus'

authority his power his dominion And you and I by virtue of our new birth have been given

a power of attorney from Jesus Christ Himself to transact business in his name here

on the earth to do his will here on the earth To proclaim His word

here in the earth Christ has a name that is far above all rule authority power and dominion

and every name that is named So there's no other name that's equal to it There's no other name

that you put alongside of it because the name of Jesus is above every name that has ever

been named Not only in this present age but also in the one to come So that means that in

the future there's never going to be another name that's greater than the name of Jesus

What are we talking about this morning We're talking about Jesus what a wonderful name Not only is that

name wonderful that name is powerful It's a powerful name Philippians 2:9-11 Let's turn there

And it says therefore God exalted him Christ to the highest place and gave him the name

above all names that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on

earth and under the earth And every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord to the

glory of God the Father God has exalted Christ He's seated at the right hand of

the Father right now to the highest place and gave him the name above all names And

it's at that name that every knee is going to bow How many knees Every

knee Those people who the world said names are great yes their knee is gonna bow All the

popular entertainers their knee is gonna bow All the politicians their knee is gonna bow All the

millionaires and the billionaires their knee is going to bow because the Bible says that every knee is going to

bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth Talking about demonic forces and every tongue

How many tongues Every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of

God the Father Now Every tongue is going to confess Jesus Lord That means that you have an opportunity to

confess Him now while the blood is still running warm in your vein while you're still breathing air while you

still have activity of limbs You have an opportunity to confess his name as Lord now be born again and

receive eternal life But everybody's not going to do that It's not until they die they take their last

breath and they go to a place called hell Hades read Luke chapter 16 then they'll realize that

Jesus is Lord Then while they're being tormented they will confess his name It'll be too

late Some people on the Day of Judgment when they're standing before the Lord face to

face at the great white throne judgment when the books are open and their name is not found in

the book of life they're gonna want to confess his name as Lord at that time But guess what

It's going to be too late But this scripture will be fulfilled When everything is said and done every

knee is going to bow and every tongue is going to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord The

only question is are you going to do it now because you won't be able to

do it later Revelation chapter 19 verse 16 says this and he Christ has a name written

on his robe and on his thigh Now this name is not a name of a baby in a

manger and swallowing clothes No no no no This is the name that's above every

name This is the name that every tongue is going to confess either now or later And he Christ has

a name written on his robe and on his thigh King of kings and Lord of

Lords So there'll be no doubt in anybody's mind that there's only one person who's

worthy of this title and that's Jesus Christ What a wonderful name
